The Longest Game

In the spring of 1981, the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings met for a minor-league baseball game of little importance. But over the course of 33 innings — 8 hours and 25 minutes — the game made history. It was the longest professional baseball game ever played. This story was produced in collaboration with ESPN's 30 for 30.

This story featured interviewrs with Cal Ripken, Jr., Wade Boggs, Dallas Williams, and Dave Koza. As well as Annie Life, Mike Tamburro, Tony Maners, Linda Drew, and Bill George. Huge thanks to Dan Barry of the New York Times, who wrote a book about this game called Bottom of the 33rd: Hope and Redemption in Baseball's Longest Game.

This story was produced by Nellie Gilles of Radio Diaries, and edited by Deborah George, Ben Shapiro, Joe Richman. The senior editorial producer was Eve Troeh and line producer was Cath Sankey.
